The APX Structured E1 Circuit Emulation Module (SCEM) is a member of the APX Universal Interface Module range. The SCEM provides the user with the capability to emulate a structured E1 circuit over an ATM backbone connection using AAL.1 adaptation. The SCEM may operate in either structured or unstructured mode. When operating in structured mode, bandwidth savings may be made by only transporting those timeslots which are in use, rather than the entire E1 frame.

The SCEM terminates a single PVC per E1 interface and propagates clock information through the use of adaptive clock mode. Cell Delay Variation may be minimised through the use of partial payloads and configurable CDVT allows for reliable connections to be maintained. Comprehensive operating statistics are gathered at the physical and ATM layers to aid diagnostics and provide billing information. The SCEM provides extensive alarm handling and propagation using OAM F5 end to end cell flows in addition to trunk conditioning.

Management and configuration of the SCEM is achieved via the simple menu driven user interface and may be monitored using SNMP Traps.
